Tips for Using the Ask Cal Widget Builder
October 22, 2025
The Ask Cal widget builder is an AI-powered tool that helps you create custom CaliberMind widgets by simply asking business questions in plain language. The builder uses AI to automatically generate the SQL queries needed to visualize your data. These queries will function alongside CaliberMind’s powerful filtering capabilities to speed up the report building process.
Accessing the Widget Builder
To use the Ask Cal widget builder:
- Navigate to Settings > Widget Builder
- Click on the Plus (+) Sign at the top right of the list
- You’ll see an input area where you can type your questions
How It Works
The widget builder operates conversationally—just type your business question as you would ask a colleague. For example:
- “Display channel attribution by month”
- “Show me total pipeline by region for the last quarter”
- “What are our top 10 customers by revenue?”
The AI will interpret your question and generate the appropriate SQL query to retrieve and display your data.
Data Access
Currently, the widget builder has access to a subset of CaliberMind tables, with additional tables being added in the future. This ensures you have access to core business data while maintaining system performance and security.
The widget builder also has access to Custom Columns from your CRM, assuming those columns have been correctly pulled on to CaliberMind tables. Instructions for adding Custom Columns can be found here.
Understanding AI Limitations
Like all AI language models, the widget builder may occasionally produce unexpected or incorrect results. This is normal and expected behavior. When this happens, you have several tools to help improve the output.
When You Encounter Errors
If the widget builder produces an error or incorrect result, you have two options:
Option 1: Send Error to Ask Cal (Recommended First Step)
When you Preview a Widget and receive an error message, click the “SEND ERROR TO ASK CAL” button located below the error message. This will:
- Resubmit your prompt along with the error details back to the AI
- Allow the system to learn from the mistake and generate a corrected result
- Help improve the widget builder’s accuracy over time
We recommend trying this option first, as the AI can often self-correct and produce the widget you need.

Option 2: Request Help
If sending the error to Ask Cal doesn’t resolve your issue, click the “Request Help” button (shown in yellow on the widget configuration panel). This will:
- Send your original prompt to our customer support team
- Include the SQL response that was generated
- Allow our team to assist you directly in creating the widget you need
Our support team will review your request and help you get your widget working correctly.

Configuring Your Widget
Once the widget builder successfully generates your SQL query, you’ll need to complete the widget configuration on the right side panel:
- Name: Enter a descriptive name for your widget (required)
- Description: Add a brief description of what the widget shows
- Component: Select the visualization type (e.g., Data Grid, Bar Chart, etc.)
- Widget Title: Enter the title that will display on your dashboard
- Widget Tooltip: Add helpful text that appears when users hover over the widget
After completing these fields, you can:
- Click PREVIEW to see how your widget will look
- Click SAVE to add the widget to your dashboard
Best Practices
- Be specific: The more details you provide in your question, the better the results
- Start simple: Begin with straightforward questions and add complexity as needed
- Use the error feedback feature: Help improve the system by sending errors back to Ask Cal when they occur
- Refine your questions: Sometimes rephrasing or adding more context can help the AI better understand your needs
- Don’t give up: If the first attempt isn’t perfect, try the error resubmission feature or request help from our support team
